A low avalanche danger level (Level 1) has been issued for the high elevations of the Tatra Mountains!
Due to the cold weather and snowfall, 10 to 40 cm of fresh snow has accumulated. On smooth surfaces, especially on grass and rocky outcrops, this layer of snow creates conditions conducive to avalanches, particularly under heavy mechanical stress. Any resulting snow slides or avalanches will mostly be small in scale, but in steep and rocky terrain, they can pose a serious danger to people.
Snowpack
At elevations above 1,600 meters above sea level, between a light dusting and 40 cm of new snow has fallen—especially at elevations above 1,900 meters above sea level. In gullies and hollows, the depth of the new snow may be greater in some places. The new snow lies on relatively warm ground without any old snow beneath it.
