Beware of wind-blown snow in the form of snow slabs and pillows!

There is a moderate avalanche danger in the High and Western Tatras, 2nd degree. The snow from the last (weekend) snowfall period has settled slightly and stabilized. However, avalanche release is still possible with a large additional load in places of wind-drifted snow and especially on steep slopes above 35°. Locations just below ridges, saddles and rock walls are also dangerous. Occasionally, smaller spontaneous avalanches may occur.

Snowpack

During the weekend, 25 to 60 cm of new snow fell in the mountains, most of it in the Tatra Mountains. Over the past two days, the snow cover has settled and stabilised slightly. The snow is still dry, except on the steep southern slopes, and loose on the leeward slopes and in the forest zone. Ridges and peaks are blown into old hard to icy snow. Near ridges and saddles, new snow is deposited in the form of less stable snow slabs and pillows. The snow cover ranges from 30 to 100 cm of snow from the mid-elevations, locally even more in the troughs.

Beware of wind-blown snow in the form of snow slabs and pillows!

In the Low Tatras and in the Fatras there is a moderate avalanche danger above the forest zone, 2nd degree. The snow from the last (weekend) snowfall period has settled slightly and stabilised. However, avalanche release is still possible with a large additional load in places of packed snow and especially on steep slopes above 35°. Locations just below ridges, saddles and rock faces are also dangerous. Occasionally, smaller spontaneous avalanches may occur.

Snowpack

During the weekend, 15 to 40 cm of new snow fell in the Low Tatras and Fatras region. Over the past two days, the snow cover has settled and stabilised slightly. With the exception of the steep southern slopes, the snow is still dry and loose on the leeward slopes and in the forest zone. Ridges and peaks are blown into old hard to icy snow. Near ridges and saddles, new snow is deposited in the form of less stable snow slabs and pillows. The snow cover ranges from 25 to 70 cm of snow from the mid-elevations, locally more in the troughs.
