Slabs of new snow represent the main danger
Snow showers will hit our mountains from the northwest. Lúčanská Malá Fatra, Veľká Fatra, High and Low Tatras will have less new snow, therefore there will be only a small avalanche danger (1st degree). The snow will increase gradually during the day. The danger will be mainly in locations where there was older snow on which up to 10 cm of new snow will fall. The snowfall will be accompanied by strong northwesterly winds, which will cause the formation of snow slabs on southern and southeastern orientations. Due to the relatively small amount of new snow, only small avalanches are expected.
Snowpack
Overall snow cover in the mountains is below average. Most of the time it is only 10 to 40 cm. In addition, it is very unevenly distributed. There is very little to no snow on the eastern and south-eastern slopes. There may be more snow on the western and south-western slopes and above the forest belt and in narrow couloirs. Smaller slabs and snow pillows of blown snow may be found here, lying on top of a layer of older, frozen snow. The new snow will be poorly bonded to the old snow.
Tendency
With snowfall increasing.
