Slabs of new snow represent main danger.

Snow showers will hit our mountains from the northwest. Most of the snow will fall in Krivanská Mala Fatra and the Western Tatras. The snow will increase gradually during the day, so there will be a moderate avalanche danger (2nd degree) above the treeline afternoons. The danger will mainly be posed by locations where there was older snow on which about 10 - 15 cm of new snow will fall. The snowfall will be accompanied by strong north-westerly winds, which will cause snow slabs to form on southern and south-eastern orientations. Due to the small amount of new snow, we expect only small to medium-sized avalanches.

Snowpack

There is a very unevenly distributed snow cover on the ground. Most of the snow is in narrow gullies and moguls. Approximately 10-15 cm of new snow will fall in the next few days with wind. The new snow will be poorly bonded to the older base. Overall, there is only below average snow cover on the mountains, only 10 - 40 cm.

Tendency

With snowfall during the day increasing.

Slabs of new snow represent the main danger

Snow showers will hit our mountains from the northwest. Lúčanská Malá Fatra, Veľká Fatra, High and Low Tatras will have less new snow, therefore there will be only a small avalanche danger (1st degree). The snow will increase gradually during the day. The danger will be mainly in locations where there was older snow on which up to 10 cm of new snow will fall. The snowfall will be accompanied by strong northwesterly winds, which will cause the formation of snow slabs on southern and southeastern orientations. Due to the relatively small amount of new snow, only small avalanches are expected.

Snowpack

Overall snow cover in the mountains is below average. Most of the time it is only 10 to 40 cm. In addition, it is very unevenly distributed. There is very little to no snow on the eastern and south-eastern slopes. There may be more snow on the western and south-western slopes and above the forest belt and in narrow couloirs. Smaller slabs and snow pillows of blown snow may be found here, lying on top of a layer of older, frozen snow. The new snow will be poorly bonded to the old snow.

Tendency

With snowfall increasing.
