Avalanche Problem
New snow
1800m

During the passage of a frontal system associated with a pressure low, snowfalls are expected in the highest elevations of the Slovak mountains. In the highest altitudes (above 1800m above sea level) of the High, Western and Low Tatras there is a SMALL avalanche danger - the first degree of the five-part international scale. The avalanche danger will be mainly in places where the snow will be deposited in smaller snow slabs and pillows. Such locations will be mainly on the north-facing sides of ridges, peaks and terrain obstacles. Avalanches will be able to be released by large additional loads, and their danger will be mainly from pushing the affected person into exposed terrain.

Snowpack

During the night and Friday morning up to 10 cm of new snow will be added in the highest altitudes of the Slovak mountains. In the middle and lower altitudes there is no snow cover, continuous snow cover can be found above 1800 m above sea level. Most snow is found on the leeward sides of the mountains - especially the northern exposures. Smaller slabs and snow pillows can be found here, which may lie on top of a layer of old, hardened, frozen snow.

Tendency

Slightly increasing with expected snowfall - or the boundary of persistent avalanche danger is expected to shift to lower elevations.
