Beware of wind-drifted snow in the form of snow pillows and slabs!

In the Western and Low Tatras at altitudes above 1800 m above sea level, due to the wind and the last snowfall, there is a MODERATE avalanche danger, 2nd degree. The newer snow was blown by strong winds onto the layers of older snow, with which it is not sufficiently bound. The release of slab avalanches is possible especially under heavier loads and on steep to very steep slopes. Spontaneous avalanches are not expected.

Snowpack

During the last snowfall, 10-25 cm fell on the mountains, which was blown by strong winds to the leeward slopes. The wind-drifted snow is deposited in the form of less stable snow slabs and pillows, with older snow not sufficiently bound. Its height reaches up to 50 cm in some places.

Beware of wind-drifted snow!

In the High Tatras and in the eastern part of the Low Tatras there is a SMALL avalanche danger. This is mainly related to leeward places, in troughs and under rock walls where there is a larger amount of new snow.
